SEDCO has recently launched a new BUS (Business Update Scarborough) page on Facebook. Local businesses can post changes in hours, temporary closures, online offerings and more. We went there and saw there are options for curbside service from our fave local eateries! Check it out: https://www.facebook.com/UpdateScarborough
We all want to make sure all our neighbors have what they need to stay healthy and safe. Any senior (over 65) Scarborough resident who would benefit from a weekly check-in phone call can use this Google form to be added to the Town of Scarborough's call list (or call 730-4150 to sign up). Town staff will make all the calls, and the Town won't share this number with any other group.
The Scarborough Food Pantry, Scarborough Public Works, Project GRACE, and Wayside Foods are working together to make sure neighbors enrolled in the senior box program will get their monthly boxes as usual. Seniors already on the list and living in Scarborough can expect to have their boxes delivered the first week of April. To sign up for a box, or for more info, contact Project GRACE (883-5111) or fill out the contact form.
Connect with Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) Resource Specialists at 207-396-6500 or by email at [email protected] for information related to the impact of the Coronavirus. SMAA also provides information for older adults and adults with disabilities on topics such as housing, Medicare, transportation, etc. as well as for caregivers. >> MORE
Meals on Wheels will continue to be delivered at this time. Extra frozen meals (storm packs—just like in a snowstorm) will be delivered to all Meals on Wheels participants and SMAA has ordered shelf-stable packs that will also go out to MOWs participants in the coming weeks. Please contact SMAA to arrange for a home-delivered meal, especially for any senior who was attending Community Cafes for lunch.
Through These Doors is a domestic-violence resource center that serves Cumberland County. The organization cannot accept donations of hygiene products and children’s items right now, so money is needed to purchase those items and other supplies.
As the number of coronavirus cases in Maine increases, nonprofits are trying to balance social distancing with essential services. And while some programs have no choice but to shut down or postpone programs and events, others like our local food pantries and social service groups are critical to the emergency response in Maine and are trying to step up while managing already tight budgets. Nonprofits Need Our Help:
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland runs a pet food pantry; the pantry is still open but is not accepting donations of linens at this time. Food donations are still needed. The ARLGP partners with Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) to provide Meals on Wheels recipients in the Greater Portland area assistance with pet food when needed. To learn more about the Ani-Meals on Wheels Program, please contact SMAA.
Catholic Charities of Maine is looking for volunteers for a telephone reassurance program, which pairs volunteers with seniors for a check-in call. Interested people can apply online at ccmaine.org/volunteer or call 523-1154 for more information.
